Mask Punu - Congo and Gabon


Mask found in the south of Gabon and in the Congo, also across the Congo river. It represents a female figure covered with a patina of kaolin which symbolizes mourning and braids of roosters which mark their rank in the tribe. .
It is made up of 9 points in red diamond which symbolizes wisdom, protection, justice.
This mask is used in rites by Mukuyu members.
The wearer of this mask climbed on long bamboos and made acrobatically dances during the funeral ceremonies.

It was also a kind of intermediary between the realms of the dead and the living.

Masque que l’on retrouve dans le sud du Gabon et au Congo, egalement a travers le fleuve Congo.Il represente une figure feminine recouvert d’une patine de kaolin qui symbolise le deuil et des tresses de coqs qui marquent leur rang dans la tribu.

Il est compose de 9 points en losange rouge qui symbolise la sagesse,protection,justice.

Ce masque est utilise dans les rites par les membres Mukuyu.

Le porteur de ce masque montait sur de longs bambous et realisait des danses acrobatiques lors des ceremonies funeraires.

Il servait egalement d’intermediaire entre le monde des vivants et celui des morts.
