Mask Yuruba

Mask found in West Africa, Nigeria, on the right bank of the Niger River, also in Benin, Ghana and Togo.
This mask belonged to a secret society called Genere.
The bird on the head means "Mother" and the face covered with a yellow patina which signifies the importance of the rank that the woman who carried it had in this tribe.
Female mask.
This mask was used during nocturnal ceremonies where the bearer of the mask (Mother) transformed into a bird and was invited by the souls to examine the possible problems of the tribe.
This mask was worn as a crest.
The carrier had important powers. She intervened in other secret societies and influenced the decisions of traditional authorities by denocating the work of men.
The mask was also intended to restore social harmony in the society of women.
